Community Invited to Downtown Parking Public Forum
The City of Rome and the Downtown Development Parking Office invites the community to attend a Public Forum to learn about the proposed parking plan for downtown. The forum will be held on Wednesday, March 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the Forum River Center’s River Walk Ballroom. The public is invited to drop-in anytime between the hours of 5-7 p.m. at the Downtown Parking Public Forum. The public forum is designed to be highly interactive and the public will be encouraged to share input on the proposed plan.
The City of Rome and the Downtown Development Parking Office recently facilitated a study to identify parking needs for Downtown Rome. The public reviewed the study results and shared feedback through an online survey where over 1,200 people completed the survey.
In response to both the study and the public survey results, the Parking Committee proposed a parking plan that best benefits Downtown Rome businesses, residents and visitors to enhance current parking as well as provide for future parking needs.
The proposed plan recommends removing time limits for all street parking and provides free access to public parking decks. The parkingrecommendations increase free parking from 350 spaces to over 900 parking spaces.
The current 2-hour parking time limit for on-street parking will shift to unlimited paid kiosk parking. Paid parking costs would run $1.25 per hour for the first 1 to 3 hours and $3.00 per hour after 4 hours. Parking would be enforced Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and customers would receive a 15-minute grace period twice per day.
A major benefit to using kiosk parking is access to a free app to notify customers when time is almost expired. Customers can easily add time to the parking kiosk through the app. Additionally, kiosk screens notify customers of downtown news and events.
Free parking would be available at all public parking decks to include Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue decks.
